Lessons from one of the leading money winners in WSOP history(Annie Duke)

There are some of the lessons learned from Annie Duke’s book called Thinking in Bets
– how to make smarter decisions when you don’t have all of the facts.

Anne LaBarr Duke (née Lederer; September 13, 1965) is an American professional poker player and author. She holds a World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet from 2004 and used to be the leading money winner among women in WSOP history.

There are a lot of takeaways from this book.

I learned how to be more objective in life by surrounding yourself with a lot of different opinions. People tend to stay in a bubble and are resistant to being open-minded because it might challenge what they already know.

The value of making better decisions every day in life by getting the truth even when it hurts.

There is a story about how the World Series of Poker player won millions of dollars and right afterward where most people would celebrate he asked and dissected everywhere where we could have improved by poor decision-making skills.

That is the dedication it takes to be really good at your craft and mastery.

Annie gives many examples from her life where she too fell to her emotions and blamed bad luck where in actuality everything normalizes. People are not willing to accept their mistakes but blame it on others like their manager or their coworkers who were promoted because they were “schmoozing”.

It’s a really interesting concept actually.

I would recommend this book for anyone into self-development and looking to become more open-minded in general about everything in life. It really made me think about what I want to do to challenge my status quo thoughts on certain things that I feel like I know a lot about.

Purpose: I create an empowering context for curious and hungry people looking for fulfillment, experiences, and creativity. We do this by developing their growth mindset, introducing self-love, and powerful group experiences. It results in people with strong boundaries, resilient mental health, and practical life skills

People leave with the ability to land their dream job, have autonomy and flexibility with their lifestyle, travel the world, and create from their heart and soul.

Why:

Davidson was once broke, insecure, low-confidence, and frustrated by doing all the wrong activities. Addicted to drugs, validation, and wallowing in self-pity. No relationship to family, and at the mercy of other people’s suggestions and opinions.

It was hell.

After spending $100k hiring different coaches, traveling the world doing workshops around the world, reading>1000 books, and through curiosity, have created the most effective system to remove people from that situation. My life’s work is to bring joy and abundance to people who as on a similar path as I was and bring back the joy and abundance of their life.

Through shared experiences and storytelling, I inspire and model behaviors that lead to a richer, more fulfilled life full of joy, experiences, passion, and ecstasy from the richness of relationships and being able to experience the depths of the human experience.
